Exterior House Painting in Kempner, Texas: Winter Refresh Tips

As the owner of Howdy Painting, I always love sharing stories from our latest projects. It's not just about the paint—it's about transforming homes and making our clients' visions come to life. Recently, we had the pleasure of completing an exterior paint job for a charming home just outside Kempner, Texas. Even in the quieter winter months, we're out there delivering top-notch results. Let me walk you through this one—it was a great example of how a little maintenance can go a long way in protecting and beautifying your property.

The Project at a Glance

This job focused on refreshing the home's exterior without a full overhaul. The house features a classic cream and brown color scheme, with brick on three sides and hardy board on the fourth. The homeowners wanted to stick with the original colors, so we matched them perfectly to keep that timeless look intact. Our team handled the trim, fascia, and soffit, giving everything a fresh coat to enhance curb appeal and weather resistance.

But it wasn't just painting—we tackled some necessary repairs too. We identified and replaced four rotted trim pieces around the windows, ensuring structural integrity and preventing future issues. The chimney's wooden trim was in rough shape from years of exposure, so we swapped out all of it with durable new materials. These fixes are crucial in Texas weather, where heat, rain, and wind can take a toll on wood elements.

Tackling the Job in December

We wrapped this up in just three days, even with the repairs included. December is our slower season here in Central Texas, which means we can dedicate more focused time to each project. It also allowed us to offer a heavy discount, bringing the total cost to the customer down to $2,850. Keep in mind, this was a winter special—during peak season (think spring and summer), demand ramps up, and you should expect prices to increase for similar work. If you're planning ahead, now's a smart time to book and lock in those savings!

Tips for Winter Exterior Painting

Painting in winter can be tricky, but with the right precautions, it's entirely doable and can yield excellent results. Here are some key tips to ensure success:

  • Check Temperature Requirements: Always paint when temperatures are above the manufacturer's recommended minimum to avoid issues like poor adhesion or cracking. For Sherwin-Williams exterior paints like Duration or Resilience, application is possible down to 35°F, with ideal ranges of 50°F to 90°F. Kelly-Moore recommends not applying below 5°F above the dew point, often aligning with 35°F minimums. Benjamin Moore allows down to 35°F to 100°F for many products, with some as low as 40°F. Behr exterior paints require 35°F to 90°F.

  • Monitor Humidity Levels: Keep humidity below the manufacturer's guidelines to prevent bubbling or slow drying. Sherwin-Williams emphasizes moisture-resistant formulas but generally advises stable, low-humidity conditions. Kelly-Moore specifies not exceeding 85% relative humidity. Benjamin Moore recommends as low as possible, ideally 40-50%. Behr notes that higher humidity (60-70%) at lower temps requires extra drying time before rain.

  • Paint During the Warmest Hours: Schedule work for midday when temperatures peak, giving the paint more time to dry before cooler evenings set in.

  • Prepare Surfaces Thoroughly: Ensure all surfaces are clean, dry, and free of frost or dew—winter mornings can bring unexpected moisture that affects adhesion.

Why This Matters for Your Home

Projects like this remind me why I got into the painting business: small investments can yield big rewards. By addressing rot early and applying high-quality paints, we not only improved the aesthetics but also extended the life of the home's exterior. The homeowners were thrilled with the seamless color match and the quick turnaround—no disruptions during the holidays.

If your home's exterior is looking a bit worn or you're spotting signs of rot, don't wait for problems to worsen. At Howdy Painting, we're equipped to handle everything from touch-ups to full transformations, all with a commitment to quality and customer satisfaction.
